Presentations in the classrooms are both used by students and teachers in many different discipline areas. Teachers tend to use presentation methods such as PowerPoint to deliver information to students rather than writing that information on the whiteboard. On the other hand, students have used PowerPoint or similar to present assessment tasks or use it to add to an oral presentation or something similar.
In this blog, I will be exploring Microsoft PowerPoint. There are a number of elements that are embedded into PowerPoint that can enhance presentations, engage learners and allow students to explore higher-order thinking.
As PowerPoint is a common way to present information there are a number of elements to enhance the PowerPoint for both teachers and students.
The information is recorded and accessible to students. We have experienced in the last couple of years the importance to move online due to the pandemic. Using PowerPoint to present information allows students who are absent to still view that information and engage with the material. This can be done by 'sharing' this video by sending it to student emails, which allows each student to have their own copy of the material.

2. Images, videos and audio can be embedded into the PowerPoint Presentation. Below, I have attached screenshot on how to add both videos and images into the presentation.

When adding an image there are a number of option to do this. You can add an image from your Photos (Apple) via 'Photo Brower'. 'Picture from File' is adding images from saved files on your computer. You can also add 'Stock Images' and 'Online Pictures'. This is an important part to adding images to your presentation.

When adding audio, you can add from Garage Band and Apple Music from 'Audio Brower' and add 'Audio from File' from audio saved on your computer.

Video 1 is a recorded PowerPoint that was submitted for a previous assessment. The video includes audio and video of myself presenting information on the page.
I have added a slideshow I have put together with images, videos and audio. This is done through Scribd. The PowerPoint will need to be downloaded to fully access the different media elements.
Powerpoint is used in schools on a regular basis and is accessible for all students of all ages. According to the AITSL standard 4.5 use ICT safely, responsible and ethically, graduate teachers need to demonstrate an understanding of relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership [AITSL], 2017). Teachers must monitor students use on PowerPoint and uphold the standards. Ethically, users still need to reference information and media used in the presentation.
Substitution: Teacher uses PowerPoint to display information from the textbook.
Augmentation: Teacher uses PowerPoint and shares with students for access for homework tasks and to review during assessment.
Modification: Teacher embeds images and video into the PowerPoint to transform learning in the classroom.
Redefinition: Teacher uses embedded media in PowerPoint, with mindmaps and brainstorming components to transform learners higher order thinking.
In the HPE context, PowerPoint can be used to show images, videos and audio in many different ways. When teaching a theory unit on Body Image, students can engage with different images representing how people might feel about their body, videos about how people act towards their body. When teaching a practical lesson, students can engage with material on the sport, images of different skills and audio from professional games as an example.
Working as an learning support officer in schools I see the excellent use and need of PowerPoint in classrooms as it can cater better for all students. The media assists visual learners, the teacher talking or audio imbeded assists auditory learners and kinaesthetic learners benefit from class discussion based on the topic.

Good one Geraldine, It’s seems you are very fluent with PowerPoint. This assessment (Pecha Kucha) was the first time I’ve ever used PowerPoint, I found it very difficult at first.
Hi Geraldine, what a good blog you have created. One thing I learnt was the ability to send the ppt via email within the application itself. This sure does beat attaching it via email. I then like the in depth step by step procedures to adding a voice over or online media. You then linked this in by doing it yourself which you uploaded the video onto your blog to show a previous assignment video.
Hi Geraldine, Such a great, informative blog post! I particularly liked your inclusion of in depth information on the features of a PowerPoint and how they can be used. Have you considered including a link to another form of Digital Media for basic overview? The blog seems to dive straight into the technical aspects rather than simply how to create the presentation in a basic form. You might consider adding other digital media that could work alongside your procedure and enhance the reader's understanding, just a suggestion! Additionally, your examples of the SAMR model and use of PowerPoint was great, however I feel it could be elevated with the inclusion of specific examples from your subject area and example assessments/examples. Overall, a great post and overview of the topic!
Digital Media to Enhance Teaching and Learning The use of digital media in schools allows students to maintain engagement in learning as students learn visually and kinesthetically and not solely auditory (Cole, D. 2014). In a study by the University of Iowa, Professor Amy Poremba states that the use of technologies in schools and the interactive use of computer graphics and videos add more sense which can make visual cues stronger and improve visual memory which can also lead to increased attention span (Cole, D. 2014). Using video in the Health and Physical Education classroom can enhance the learning of students in the class.
